The 'Camberwell Beauty' (N. Antiopa) is dark maroon with a border of bright blue spots and cream edges and is a native of Europe, Asia and North and South America. It received its British name when two specimens were discovered in 1748 at Cold Harbour Lane, near Camberwell. It is thought that they had been stowaways on ships bringing timber from Scandinavia, as the species does not normally breed in Britain on account of the mild wet winters. In North America it is known as Mourning Cloak.
13th April - 19th April
Crystal Method synthesises traditional methods with an original, contemporary approach. Tactile, knitted settlements and sparse drawings of domestic scenes form fictional scenarios that are eerily devoid of people, while obsessively intricate drawings tease the boundary between fiction and reality, in which the idyllic and luxurious are disturbingly decayed, blurred or distorted. Crude applique, reminiscent of old family hobbies, hang in an affectionate cluster, against which are monstrous, three-dimensional-looking crystals, formed from nineteenth-century engravings and pencil drawings of seemingly unrelated objects.
20th April - 25th April 2007
An exhibition of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and video. 12 artists respond to issues including nostalgia, time, distortion through memory and the aging process.
