SOME QUIET PURSUIT brings together the work of six artists in their final year at Chelsea College of Art. Through painting, drawing, sculpture and video, the exhibition combines the intellectual with the aesthetic, the conceptual with the beautiful.
Oliver Rafferty's work can emerge from anything (the possibilities of an A4 sheet of paper, a walk, a length of time) before going through a long, rigid process of manipulation, creation and recreation. Inspired by the times, spaces and events of the everyday, the work often finishes as a clean elegant object -€“ an exaggeration of a thought.
William Robinson explores the nature of values that we place on objects; values based on criteria such as material, the labour invested in their creation and the artists touch. Much of his work takes the form of small-scale sculpture and drawings.
Richard Butler will be showing a painting entitled One Step Forward, Two Steps Back (Grey). One Step Forward, Two Steps Back is a process that he has applied to many aspects of his artistic production, beginning as an analogy for how he views his own artistic practice. Through set rules, the method was applied over a period of 21 days (3 weeks symbolising 3 steps). The painting is made up of layers of black and white paint (black representing one step forward, white representing one step back). In total there are 61 layers and the piece was completed with one layer of black.
Gareth Lloyd takes ambiguous and subjective imagery in the form of negative and positive film and arranges them into objective shapes with latent meaning. The resulting image is treated as an object with multiple potentials of production.
Giles Ripley communicates the importance of seemingly throwaway thought processes and human behaviour through an accessible manipulation of experimental film. Popular culture is a fundamental influence in his work
Bella Szyszkowska looks at the spaces created in written narratives between the reader, viewer and experience. This is combined with the fracturing that occurs between a physical experience and a remembered space.
